Sit down for five minutes.
Open your computer, grab a pen and a piece of paper, open up an app on your phone. It doesn’t matter what you use, just use something that you can save. This is NOT a mental exercise. You must put this on paper (either real or virtual) so that you can refer back to it on those bad days.
Set a timer for five minutes and write.
Write using the prompt I AM ________.
Don’t edit, don’t proofread, don’t change it. You are not required to share it with anyone, even though I hope you do, but keep it close by so that on those days when you are feeling really horrible about yourself (we all know that we have those days), you can look back and remember all the things that make you wonderful.
Ready, GO!
I am a military brat that was moved to a new city every two to three years until high school.
I am both resentful and grateful for that.
I am a college dropout, not because I couldn't hack it, but because I was assaulted, abused and mistreated and was afraid to go back.
I am a Fraud Investigator, by trade.
I am terrified to leave my job even though I no longer like it. Like, at all.
I am a poet with writer's block going on 7 years.
I am plagued by regret and nightmares surrounding my mothers death.
I am worried that I will turn out just like her.
I am a Birthmom to the coolest, smartest, most handsome little dude I know.
I am scared, every single day, that I will fail my girls as a result of the guilt I have about placing my son for adoption.
I am sarcastic because beating the crap out of people is, in fact, frowned upon in most societies.
I am temperamental, argumentative and stubborn.
I am kind, witty, loving and devoted.
I am a fighter.
I am a daughter, a sister, a granddaughter, a cousin, an aunt, a Godmother, a friend and, most importantly, a Mom.
I am Jeannette.
Ok, it's your turn! Who are YOU?
Feel free to share in the comments or message me privately and I will share your I Am _____ stories in a future post! If you don't want to share, I hope you at least do the drill for yourself.
Cheers!
